Canadian Open Data Experience
In February 2014, the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus hosted the keynote address for the Canadian Open Data Exchange hackathon, delivered by former bit.ly Chief Data Scientist, Hilary Mason.
The original intention for this video was to post a recording of an interview she gave after her keynote address. Unfortunately, the production company responsible for the event lost the recording, and I was left with only the footage from Ms. Mason's keynote address. I aimed to tell her story in a five-minute piece, condensing the pieces of her address which I believed were most important (and of course, musical). I combined her speech clips with originally composed music in order to tell the story of big data, and produced this accompanying video. I'm extremely proud of the result.
I eventually released the audio as a track called Big It Has To Be To Be on my Spoke And Mirror release, Volume For A Vacuum. The piece was played on CBC's The Strombo Show and The Signal in 2015. You can find the Spoke And Mirror release here: https://spokeandmirror.bandcamp.com/
There is also a blog post I wrote to accompany the original production, which was posted on the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus blog. You can read it here: https://uwaterloo.ca/stratford-campus/blog/post/big-data
